When God Wants Your Attention

The following short story is another excerpt from My Precious Life, the book.

A banner heralding the message ‘I’ve found it! You can find it too!’ had been hanging in my teenage son’s room for several weeks. Whenever I looked at it I wondered what it meant. I asked my son but he didn’t know. Someone had given it to him and posters are posters so up on the wall it went. It nibbled at my mind every time I looked at it. One evening my youngest son, then ten, asked “Mom, what does that sign mean?” “I don’t know,” I admitted, “but I’ll find out.”

At that precise moment the phone rang. It was a soft-spoken woman who asked, “Have you seen a sign around with the message ‘I’ve found it, you can find it too’?” The hair stood up on my arms and they began to tingle. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. “Yes” I timidly replied, “I have.” “Do you know what it means?” was her next question. “No,” I admitted, feeling the tingling sensation overwhelming my body. She went on to explain that it was a message from several inter-denominational churches attempting to lead people to, or back to God and the church.

As the conversation progressed my caller asked permission to pray with me. How could I say no? It was a simple prayer, then she thanked me for listening, saying mine was the first positive response she had received after many calls. When I told her why, she was silent for a moment before quietly stating, “God does work in mysterious ways.” It was to be a life changing moment for me but I didn’t know it then.

Not long after that one of my youngest son’s friends asked him to go to church with him and his mother. He enjoyed going to Sunday school with his friend. One Sunday as he was getting ready to leave he said, “Mom, if you come to church with me today you will get a rose. All the moms who come will get one.” “Not today, dear,” I replied, “I have a lot to do. You run along.” I turned back to reading the newspaper. Suddenly, I found myself racing up the stairs. “Wait for me,” I called, “I’ll go with you!” Slipping into something suitable I was ready in no time. It was the strangest feeling; almost like invisible hands were gently nudging me along.

After the service my son introduced me to his teacher. She told me he had shared the banner story with the class. “When he got to the part about the phone call,” she said, “my senses came alive. It was I who called you, Mrs. Boyes. I made many, many calls that night and yours was the only positive response.” “What a blessing to have you and your son with us this morning.”

That was the beginning of my real spiritual journey. I learned how to listen for the still, small voice of God. I learned how to pray effectively. I learned how to look for the miracles in everyday life. But most of all I learned that when God wants to get your attention he starts with a little nibble, patiently waits until you take the bait then reels you in hook, line and sinker.

My son now works in an environment where helping people is the main criteria. His friend became a full time minister. As for me, I don’t just go to church, I am involved in many ways. I still love listening for the still, small voice and when He says, “You go, girl,” He’s got my attention.

Is an Owl Really Wise?

One of my great-granddaughters loves owls so whenever I come across one of these wise old birds I take notice. But is an owl really that wise? It appears that he lags behind other birds, particularly ravens, in having the smarts, but the message today sounds wise to me. Happy Saturday.

God Has a Sense of Humor

And so should we, even on Sunday. Proverbs 17:22 says A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.

*One Sunday morning, the pastor noticed little Alex standing in the foyer of the church staring up at a large plaque. It was covered with names with small American flags mounted on either side of it.

The seven-year-old had been staring at the plaque for some time, so the pastor stood by the little boy and said, “Good morning, Alex.” “Good morning, Pastor,” he replied still focused on the plaque.

“Pastor, what is this?” he asked.

“Well, son, it’s a memorial to all the young men and women who died in the service.”

Soberly they stood together staring at the large plaque when finally Alex, his voice barely audible and trembling with fear, asked, “Which service was it, the 9:45 or the 11:15?”

*Found on the internet 7/4/2016.

Happy Sunday.

Born Again?

“Are you a born again Christian?” This was a question posed to me a few months ago and I wasn’t sure how to respond. And so I didn’t. I changed the subject to allow myself time to digest the question and be certain of  my answer.

John 3:1-20 gives us a conversation between Nicodemus and Jesus about this very topic and Jesus tells the man, “You should not be surprised at my saying, `You must be born again.'”

Some of my research on born again turned up phrases such as ,”spiritual renewal” “spiritual transformation” and I have definitely had experiences in both of these. I also found that the Greek meaning is “born from above.”

Here is a point of view from a sermon of years ago: “All those who put their trust in Christ, even though they have times of doubt, have been born from above and have been given the gift of the Spirit.”

So…am I a born again Christian? Most definitely.

Who You Are

The following is taken from Charles Stanley’s book, Relying on the Holy Spirit:

God knows who you are. He knows who He created you to be and which natural gifts, talents, abilities, and personality traits He put into your life. He knows which motivational gift is best suited to you.

God knows how to place us within a body of people to accomplish His ministry. He will open doors of opportunity for you to minister in a way that is suited to your natural gifts. Be open to how and when the Holy Spirit chooses to use you.

This is sound advice for those asking the question, “Who am I and why am I here?” Happy Sunday.

Food for Thought

How many of us today are wondering what in the world is wrong with our world? Here is something that was shared on Facebook yesterday and could possibly be a clue to the answer to that very question.

Conformity is doing what everybody else is doing, regardless of what is right.

Morality is doing what is right, regardless of what everybody else is doing.

These are not mere words to read and dismiss but real words to give us food for thought.

What will make the difference in the world is the wisdom to differentiate.

Do You Believe It?

In Soul Stories, a book by Gary Zuvak, he wrote, among other things, “Believe that when you ask a question you always get an answer.” I don’t know why, but the question I asked was, “Where am I from?”

I was led to a meditation site online from a note I had taken on a television program a few nights earlier. The meditation that day was titled “Home”. It suggested that I am from another dimension, one of peace, and light, and silence. This explains my love of silence…I bask in it when stillness seems to envelop me from time to time.

At different times in prior years I had written poems, one titled,” A New Dimension” where becoming aware of the things we usually ignore opens our eyes to what’s around us. “The Journey” depicts a life of love and serenity.

To my mind, heaven is another dimension and perfectly fits the description above…love and serenity.

If I had ignored the prompting to take a note from a television program, I would not have been aware of the online meditation that gave me a fairly apt description of “where I am from”.

I attribute the inspiration for “The Journey” to a surgeon who many years ago released me from hospital with these words, “Live, love, and be happy.” And this is precisely my life today.

Do you believe it?

A Question of Trust

A question I often get asked is, “How did you get such deep faith?” The answer has to be that I seem to, without knowing it, have trusted God all of my life…and with my life.

Yesterday, I came upon this scripture which seems to sum it up perfectly for me: “Yet you brought me out of the womb; you made me trust in you even at my mother’s breast. From birth I was cast upon you; from my mother’s womb you have been my God.” Psalm 22: 9-10 NIV

I’m not sure that any better explanation is available. In whom do you put your trust? Happy Sunday.
