When the Past has Passed

Yesterday I wrote of something from the past, “A Rainbow Apology”. It was cathartic to do so whether or not the person ever sees the post. And now that episode has passed never again to be relived.

The trouble with living in the past is that it can affect our present by draining some of its happiness.

There are some who dwell on negative past history to the point where it robs their life of the fullness of joy that can be experienced by living in the present and doing what can be done to make it better.

In Canada, we are about to haul down the statue of Sir John A. MacDonald, the first Prime Minister of Canada who was hailed as the “father of confederation”. He had a political career which spanned almost half a century.

Yes, along with his many achievements, Sir John made mistakes but the monument was erected to honor the man of accomplishment not the man of error.

When the past has passed would it not be better to learn from it and move on without making present life a victim to it? Once again ancient scripture speaks to today’s issues.

But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, Philippians 3:13 NIV

Open Minds and Powerful Thoughts

This post is about one of my favorite pastimes…thinking. I’ll start with one thought that just came to my mind after all this research and it is this: I love an open mind where I can walk right in and garner new thoughts and ideas whereas a closed mind is similar to banging one’s head against a brick wall. The following are quotes I found on a very hot Saturday.

The mind is like a parachute; it doesn’t work if it is not open. Frank Zappa

Age is a case of mind over matter; if you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter. Mark Twain

Thought is a powerful unseen influence. (Much like the Holy Spirit.)

“Stay open to new ideas, to new perspectives, to changing your mind. Never stop learning and growing! Akiroq Brost

“An open mind is a traveled mind.” Tawanna Browne Smith, Author

Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps learning stays young. The greatest thing in life is to keep your mind young. Henry Ford

Change your thoughts and you change your world. Norman Vincent Peale

All action results from thought, so it is thoughts that matter. Sai Baba

There are things known and there are things unknown, and in between are the doors of perception. Aldous Huxley

The glow of one warm thought is to me worth more than money. Thomas Jeffery

“Your mind is a powerful thing. When you fill it with positive thoughts, your life will start to change.” Anonymous

The human mind is our fundamental resource. - John F. Kennedy

What People Say

I’m not sure what you would call a collector of sayings and quotes but it’s part of my life’s enjoyment. Every once in awhile I post some and today is no different. Happy Saturday.

Listening is the act of entering the skin of the other and wearing it for a time as if it were your own. David Spangler

Nothing is so strong as gentleness and nothing is so gentle as real strength. Francis De Sales

Empty pockets never held anyone back, it’s only empty heads and empty hearts that do it. Norman Vincent Peale

Progress always includes risk; you can’t steal second base and keep your foot on first. Frederick Wilcox

People are about as happy as they make up their minds to be. Abraham Lincoln

Some Interesting Comments

While visiting a happily married young couple, I was struck by a comment the husband made about his wife…”She was my last first date.”

A well known Canadian journalist commented on TV that the result of a recent Provincial leadership race was a “disaster wrapped in a calamity”.

Timely Messages

Once again I have come across a lovely message in one of my spiritual journals. It is from a 2007 Our Daily Bread article and goes like this:

“To show his love, Jesus died for me; to show my love, I must live for him.”

And here’s one from Pearl Bailey: People see God every day; they just don’t recognize him.

Another is from Winston Churchill: Success is not final, failure is not fatal; it’s the courage to continue that counts.

We can’t change the past but we can change the future by making the right choices today. Joel Osteen

It is better to get wisdom and understanding rather than silver and gold. Proverbs 16:16 paraphrased

Make me a channel of your peace…St. Francis of Assisi

Jesus wept. John 11:35 …This for the grief stricken in Humboldt, Saskatchewan.

Peace Be With You

The Trappist monk Thomas Merton once said, “We cannot be at peace with others because we are not at peace with ourselves, and we cannot be at peace with ourselves because we are not at peace with God”. Peace be with you. Happy Sunday.

The Matter of Dying

Well, the world, and Canada in particular, has lost another one of its stellar people.  At the age of fifty-three, Gord Downie, frontman for the Tragically Hip music group, succumbed to the brain cancer that had been a part of his life for the past two years. But before Gord left he made sure to leave a lovely legacy of love with us. His music, poetry, writings, quotes, and general “live for love” attitude will long remain in the minds of those who knew him or of him in his lifetime.

Here is a short clip from a Tragically Hip statement on Gord’s death:

Gord knew this day was coming – his response was to spend this precious time as he always had – making music, making memories and expressing deep gratitude to his family and friends for a life well lived, often sealing it with a kiss… on the lips.

Gord said he had lived many lives. As a musician, he lived “the life” for over 30 years, lucky to do most of it with his high school buddies. At home, he worked just as tirelessly at being a good father, son, brother, husband and friend. No one worked harder on every part of their life than Gord. No one.

There are those of us who have lived a lengthy life and are ready to ready to make that next step.

And then, like Gord Downie, there are those of us whose lives are brought to a close long before we think our time is up.

It’s a matter of how well we live our lives that counts, how much good we do, how much love we share while we are here that counts because in the end every single one of us will experience the matter of dying. Gord did it so well.

RIP Gord Downie.

Blessed are those who mourn for they will be comforted. Matthew 5:4 NIV

Aristotle on Labour Day

We Canadians are finishing up the last of a September long weekend, known as Labour Day. Some of us are enjoying cottage life, others day trips, and still others just lazing around enjoying not labouring at anything in particular.

Me? I’ve given myself a labour of love today. I love looking up quotes by famous people and today it is Aristotle, the Greek philosopher. Let me share a few:

Pleasure in the job puts perfection in the work.

Excellence is an art won by training and habituation. We do not act rightly because we have virtue or excellence, but we rather have those because we have acted rightly. We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.

The aim of the wise is not to secure pleasure, but to avoid pain.

Anybody can become angry – that is easy, but to be angry with the right person and to the right degree and at the right time and for the right purpose, and in the right way – that is not within everybody’s power and is not easy.

Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all.

It’s Hard To Be Humble

Just like patience, forgiveness, tolerance, and other virtues, humility needs a lot of work. It’s not always easy to put someone else’s feelings ahead of our own, or to stay quiet when we want to correct someone. It’s definitely difficult for some to acknowledge that the creator of the universe is deserving of a bowed knee, and an outstretched hand.

Here are a few quotes on humility:

True humility is not thinking less of yourself, it’s thinking of yourself less. C.S. Lewis Mere Christianity

There is no respect for others without humility in one’s self. Henri Frederic Amie

It was pride that changed angels into devils; it is humility that makes men as angels. Saint Augustine

Self praise is no recommendation.  Romanian (on flattery and praise)

Be the change you wish to see in the world. Ghandi

“A man should never be ashamed to own that he has been in the wrong, which is but saying in other words that he is wiser today than he was yesterday.” Alexander Pope

but with humility comes wisdom. Proverbs 11:2
