Sharing the Grief

Last Friday night on the outskirts of Humboldt, Saskatchewan, a horrific bus crash changed the lives of this community and surrounding areas forever.

Toronto’s Globe and Mail reported fifteen people, including 10 players between the ages of 16 and 21, were killed when a semi-trailer crashed into the Broncos’ bus late on Friday afternoon. As of Monday, 12 people remained in hospital: four in critical condition, four serious and four stable, according to Saskatchewan’s health authority.

There has been an outpouring of grief and support from around the world and I among many shed copious tears for the lives lost, those spared who will face ongoing traumatic healing, and those left behind to grieve the loss of their precious loved ones.

There are those who ask where God is at times like these.

The answer is He is with every single person whose life is touched by this tragic event.

The answer is He shares our grief.

The answer lies in John’s gospel, chapter eleven, verse thirty-five…Jesus wept.

Don’t Just Pretend to Love

Is there any other word in the dictionary or Bible or world for that matter that fills a being with the best of feelings? True love moves us to want the best for others, to have compassion, to offer protection…as when one’s umbrella is not large enough for two. May God touch you life with his true love today. Happy Sunday.

Recent Random Quotes

These random quotes have come my way over the past couple of days. One of them popped into my mind while conversing with a fellow blogger and it is this: Self awareness is the first step to self improvement. If someone has seen this somewhere before please let me know. I really like it and have already learned something from it.

Live in harmony with the still, small voice within you. Stephen Covey

In the realm of openness lies the miracle of the unconscious, the part of our minds that lives beneath our awareness.

We are never presented with lessons until we are ready to learn them.

Awareness equals second attention.

Life is more than just existence.

All hell breaks loose when God lets humans have their own way.

The only disability in life is a bad attitude. Scott Hamilton, Skater

What the caterpillar calls the end of the world, the master calls a butterfly. -Richard Bach

Do you think the caterpillar knew it was destined to be a butterfly?

It’s Supernatural

So what does supernatural mean? Here’s one on-line dictionary’s explanation:

su·per·nat·u·ral
  1. 1.
(of a manifestation or event) attributed to some force beyond scientific understanding or the laws of nature.
    “a supernatural being”

Today I read this in one of my spiritual journals: Faith – the supernatural ability to trust God.

In his book, Twelve Gifts from God, William Warch wrote: Everyone has the gift of faith but not everyone has an active faith.

So then I looked up the word activate, simply put by Wikipedia …

Activate is a verb meaning to make operative or active.

Makes sense, right? We have the gift of speech (or most of us do) but we can’t use it until we activate it by opening our mouths and putting our tongue, lips, and vocal cords to work. So with faith…we must activate our mind, heart, intellect, and whatever it takes to lay hold of this gift and put it to phenomenal use.
I’m not going to be so brash as to try to tell anyone how to activate their gift of faith. When one feels the need, one seeks the deed. That in itself is supernatural.

God’s Flashlight

My saving grace is knowing that wherever I am, God is. There is no escaping God’s flashlight. Happy Sunday.

Where can I go from your Spirit?
Where can I flee from your presence?
If I go up to the heavens, you are there;
if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. (Psalm 139:7-8)

A Happy Heart

I am definitely going to the house of the Lord with a happy heart today…not only a happy heart but a thankful heart; thankful for all my many blessings and especially for the eighty-one years (yesterday) God has given me to be thankful for. If today is your birthday, enjoy! Happy Sunday.

The Act of Surrendering

When we think of surrendering do we think of giving up or giving in? Do we think of positive or negative?

I like to think of surrendering in a positive way…as in quitting a bad habit. Instead of surrendering to the idea that I could never quit smoking, I  surrendered to the thought that it was bad for my health and detrimental to the loved ones in closest proximity to me. With that thought in mind the surrendered state became a reality. It has been twenty-one years since smoking has been part of my life.

Likewise, when disagreements occur and cause friction in friendships, families, and relationships, the thought of trying to end the conflict could be seen as giving in or surrendering to those who we think are the cause of such disruptions. But if our thoughts are of only making things better even at the risk of further alienation, then surrendering to those thoughts instead of to the grudge can, in the end, lead to peace of mind, knowing that all attempts were made to remedy a situation even if it is not remedied.

The greatest surrender of all is surrendering to God’s plan for our life, no matter what our belief. With that surrender everything else falls into place. It may not always be to our liking or to the way we expect it should be, but we can know that it is always for our best even though that may not appear evident at the time.

As this is being written, an old year is being surrendered to a new year. There is nothing we can do about that…it just is…and in surrendering old thoughts for new, bad habits for better, bitterness for understanding, hatred for love…we will be giving in to the act of surrendering.

Happy New Year.
