God’s Sense of Humor

Big fat, fluffy, flakes of falling snow are accumulating all around my field of vision which happens to be in Scarborough, Ontario, Canada. Now this is to be expected in the throes of winter but today is April 6th!

The crocuses and daffodils were beginning to smile their way up through the thawing earth, and have had to postpone their journey…for who knows how long?

Snow shovels and salt pails stored away for the next eight months or so are about to be resurrected. Robins were chirping their spring songs and are now hiding in various tree branches.

I’m very happy that God has a sense of humor but would rather he give me something warmer to laugh about.

Love Happens

That’s the name of a movie I watched last night, starring Aaron Eckhart, Jennifer Aniston, and Martin Sheen, among others. It’s a romantic drama about an inspirational author who helps people deal with their grief after losing a loved one, while all the time harboring his own.

There were some offensive language issues to get past, but the plot was good, Jennifer was her usual relaxed and believable self, and Martin Sheen closed the decidedly moving movie with some gentle humor.

It is a movie that brought tears to my eyes, a smile to my face, and a few outright bursts of laughter. It is a feel good movie that I will definitely watch again.

This is not a review by any means…just another form of feeling the love. With Valentine’s Day just ahead, feeling the love is a good thing.

 

 

Fun in a Mailbox

Sometimes a chuckle will come out of nowhere just when you need one. I love to laugh but don’t always find something to laugh about. I found the following on an advertisement in my mailbox yesterday.

THE SILENT TREATMENT

A man and his wife were having some problems at home and were giving each other the silent treatment. Suddenly, the man realized that the next day, he would need his wife to wake him at 5 a.m. for an early morning business flight. Not wanting to be the first to break the silence (and LOSE), he wrote on a piece of paper, “Please wake me a 5 a.m.”. He left if where he knew she would find it. The next morning the man woke up, only to discover it was 9 a.m. And he missed his flight. Furious, he was about to go and see why his wife hadn’t wakened him, when he noticed a piece of paper by the bed. The paper said, “It is 5 a.m. Wake up.”

How many wives are having a little “tee hee”? How many husbands are groaning?

Let’s Give Christ Back to Christmas

The reason…and there are many of them…that we celebrate Christmas on December 25th is secondary. Celebrating the birthday of Jesus every year is really what Christmas is all about. It is remembering that he was born, lived an exemplary life, for approximately thirty-three years, and died an agonizing death. It is remembering not that he lived and died, but that he died and lives…lives in the hearts of those of us who believe, lives to reach out to those who do not believe, and lives to give real meaning to the event that is the most widely celebrated on our planet…Christmas. Let me share a poem I wrote in 1995 while pondering the idea that Santa Claus seemed to be the the reason for the season in many minds.

THE WONDER OF CHRISTMAS

The wonder of Christmas,

The birth of a Child,

The angels are singing His praises,

The people rejoice

At the sound of His voice

Echoing down through the ages.

Hope, love and laughter,

Peace and goodwill,

The message resounds loud and clear,

The birth of God’s Son,

His gift to us all,

This is the wonder of Christmas.

Some Pointers for the Blackboard of Life

Get your chalk brushes ready…you may want to brush me off today as I offer up some pointers for the blackboard of life.

1. The Golden Rule – do to others as you would have them do to you.

2. Love your enemy – it`s healthier than hating.

3. Don`t spend a thousand dollars worth of emotion on a five cent irritation.

4. Don`t worry – it is a totally unproductive pastime

5. Don`t procrastinate – it is the thief of time.

6. Smile often – it increases your face value.

7. Stop and smell the roses – before their fragrance fades.

8. Laughing and crying are comfort for the soul – they each soothe in a different way.

9. Grieve when necessary – but remember to continue to live.

10. God runs a beauty parlor – have a regular faith lift.

11. Live, love and be happy – advice to be given and taken in heaping doses.

12. It is never too late to be baptized – Jesus wasn`t baptized until he was thirty years old.

13. You are never too old to do something new – just begin.

14. Try to have twelve hugs a day – even if you have to hug yourself.

15. Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at     all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as you ever can. (John Wesley)

And now, put away the pointer, the brushes, the chalk…tomorrow the slate will be clean again for you to chalk up some lessons of your own.

When Pigs Fly

My best friend had a penchant for pigs. She collected replicas of these kind of cutesy animals by the dozens. It became a challenge to find a pig that Tanya did not have, or to find a birthday card with a pig picture and words that were particularly piggish. It was always fun to find a new pig for my friend’s collection. I once found a singing pig which belted out “My Girl” when it’s belly button was pushed. I can still hear her laughter when she played it for the first time.

Tanya did love her pigs, and yesterday I came across something on Facebook that made me smile my face off when I saw it. I’m posting it here in memory of my dear friend who moved to heaven in 2008. I still miss her very much and it gives me joy to send this flying pig to tell her so.
