I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth. Genesis 9:13
It is evening time on August 13th and I am looking at a beautiful rainbow as I write this. It reminds me of a time when I gave a book of children’s Bible stories to a little girl many years ago.
The child saw the story of Noah’s Ark and the accompanying picture of people, including children, drowning in the great flood of Genesis 7. This story had a devastating effect on the little girl and I’m sure turned her mind totally away from anything to do with God.
Unfortunately, the story was never satisfactorily explained to her nor the meaning of the rainbow that followed in Genesis 9:13, I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth.
This was God’s promise to Noah, and all of us, that He would never again do such a destructive thing to His people.
I’ve never been sure whether the flood story is allegory or not, but one thing I am sure of is that it’s effect on one little girl has haunted me since the day I was made aware of her great fear and apprehension.
Just as the rainbow of thousands of years ago was meant to be an apology from God to His people, this evening’s rainbow reminds me that because of a cruelly depicted story, a young child may have grown up to be an unbeliever…and for this I am truly sorry.
I pray that there has been enough evidence over the years of a God who loves her unconditionally and will continue to do so for the rest of her life.
This is my rainbow apology to that little girl.
Unfortunate but true, isn’t it? If we want to have the rainbow, we have to deal with the rain…and so many of us do. It’s not just those dreary rainy days that nature feeds its own, but the sadness that grips us when life feeds us our share of tragedy. Still, we must look for that rainbow, otherwise we will never experience the goodness of life that lingers on. Wishing you rainbows this Saturday.
Yesterday evening I saw a beautiful rainbow after an all day rain. All I could think was How wonderful! I wish you a Sunday just as wonderful.

A friendly wave in traffic…
The ice cream truck’s jolly jingle…
The word “uppy” from a tiny tot with up-stretched arms…

Birds feeding birds…
People hugging people…
A rainbow after a storm…
Parched plants perking up after the rain…
Again, this is only a list of ten but you get the idea; so many things can bring an instant smile. What made you smile today?
My prayer for you this Sunday…
My best friend and her sister had never lived apart in their lives except for a brief period when one of them was first married. Their lives were intertwined through childhood, early adulthood, middle years and elder age.
Tanya died first in 2008 after a battle with lung cancer. She was seventy-one years old, and her passing had left her sister alone for the first time in her life.
In 2014 Virginia, in her seventy-fifth year, succumbed to life-threatening injuries after being struck by a bus one sunny September morning.
The “ladies”, as they were lovingly referred to by family and friends, were together once again as the urns containing their ashes sat side by side in the final home they had shared, awaiting an appropriate burial location to be mutually decided upon by the family.
It seems that whenever a rainbow was sighted after the ladies had left earth, it was a promising reminder that they were united again, because the rainbow is a sign of promise.
Their memorial was held just last week and they were interred together in their final resting place. It drizzled rain during the committal but when it was time to honor their lives with celebration, a beautiful double rainbow appeared in the heavens over the site.
What a wonderful sign of promise that my best friend and her sister will never be apart again.
