A few days ago a friend reminded me of a singing group, The Seekers, very popular in the 1960’s and many years following. I spent most of Friday listening, reminiscing, smiling and even doing a few dance steps. And then this one came along and I thought it would be nice to share on a sunny Saturday (or not). How nice to see and hear this group still making beautiful music. Happy Saturday.

A New Song
Did you know that singing is good for the soul? Singing also relieves stress, exercises the lungs, and decreases depression. All this is my own opinion, but it works for me. And take this little guy…can’t you just hear him? (Of course, he could just be waiting to be fed but I prefer to believe that he is singing a new song).

On Sunday, June 10th, St. Andrew’s Scarborough celebrated its 200th anniversary. We had a new anthem commissioned for the occasion…We Will Share Your Love, O Lord, written by Don Besig and Nancy Price. Happy Sunday. (While on “pause’ forward to 37:07 for anthem only)
Don’t Worry Be Happy
Here is a song by a young man who passed away in 1981 at the age of thirty-six, Bob Marley. Bob left behind a legacy of music that will never be forgotten. This is one of my favorites. Happy weekend.

Go Now In Peace
In response to a blog on March 21st about being afraid, a friend shared that she and her husband carry a copy of Go Now In Peace at all times. We at St. Andrew’s Scarborough often end our services with this lovely piece of music. I have chosen the Ottawa Police Choir for today’s rendition. It makes me think of Jesus, on this Palm Sunday, riding on a donkey to his ultimate death on the Cross a few days later. Peace be with you. Happy Sunday.
On Being Afraid
How many of us suffer from fear on a daily basis or even just occasionally? My last bout of fear was in 2005 while waiting for confirmation of a cancer diagnosis. It was a mind and body numbing fear until the verdict came in and I had to face it…the fear and the cancer.
Here are a few things the Bible has to say about being afraid along with that delightful song, “Whistle a Happy Tune” from the 1956 movie, The King and I.
Do not be afraid for I am with you. Genesis 26:24 NIV
The LORD is the stronghold of my life— of whom shall I be afraid? Psalm 27:1 NIV
When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. Psalm 56:3
“The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. Hebrews 13:6
When you lie down, you will not be afraid; Proverbs 3:24
Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you and will rescue you,” declares the LORD. Jeremiah 1:8
Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. John 14:27
“Don’t be afraid; just believe.” Mark 5:36
These are a few teachings from scripture that have helped me as well as others overcome fear at one time or another.
And now…go ahead…whistle a happy tune.
Though Your Heart is Breaking
Here is a song that carried me through some very difficult times in my life and I know of many people at this very moment who are living this song right now including myself. Smile was composed by Charlie Chaplin in 1936 with lyrics added in 1954 when Nat King Cole recorded it. It’s a beautiful song with a beautiful message…another lesson in life.
Let Your Light Shine
We all have a light to shine and share with the world. I love when someone shines their light on me…it uplifts me and reminds me that any darkness is only a shadow in all that is good.
Stand By Me
On Thursday I attended another end-of-life celebration. A dear friend in her 95th year had been declining for a few years after breaking a hip which never completely healed. This robbed her of her active life and eventually landed her into a long-term-care facility where each year she longed to be closer to her Maker.
Not long ago as I entered her room for a visit she called out, “Oh, Pat. I’m still here and I don’t know what to do.” “Well, Carol,” I replied, “there is a long line of people waiting at the gates of Heaven and you will just have to be patient and wait your turn.”
Carol had been very active in our church and community for over sixty years and as one of our elders, cared deeply for those in her care. She, too, had been a comforting visitor to many people and had seen many of her friends climb that stairway to heaven.
I had the opportunity and pleasure of meeting her two sons and daughter on many occasions while visiting Carol. Their love for their mother was very evident in the way they each attended to her needs at various times. There was affection, gentle chiding, wholesome conversation and endless hours of just being with her. They were always standing by her side.
Yesterday I heard that wonderful song, “Stand by Me” and it brought tears to my eyes as Carol and her devoted family came into my mind.
Don’t we all need somebody to Stand by Me? Enjoy this rendition from many parts of our world and have a Happy Saturday.
