Happy Earth Day

As we acknowledge Earth Day and do our best to tend to our little corner of the world, let us remember this psalm of David:

Psalm 24:1NIV: The earth is the LORD’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it;

Happy Sunday

From a Distance

This picture always reminds me of Bette Midler’s 1990  recording of God is Watching Us:

From a distance the world looks blue and green
And the snow capped mountains white
From a distance the ocean meets the stream
And the eagle takes to flight

God is watching us
God is watching us
God is watching us from a distance

The Boardwalk of Life

As we walk along the boardwalk of life, though the boards are uneven at times, may our steps be guided and our trips be few. Happy Sunday.

Then you will travel safely on your way, and your foot will not stumble. Proverbs 3:23

Go Now In Peace

In response to a blog on March 21st about being afraid, a friend shared that she and her husband carry a copy of Go Now In Peace at all times. We at St. Andrew’s Scarborough often end our services with this lovely piece of music. I have chosen the Ottawa Police Choir for today’s rendition. It makes me think of Jesus, on this Palm Sunday, riding on a donkey to his ultimate death on the Cross a few days later. Peace be with you. Happy Sunday.

Beside Still Waters

Psalm 23

23 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.

He makes me lie down in green pastures: he leads me beside the still waters.

He restores my soul: he leads me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for you are with me; your rod and your staff they comfort me.

5  You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies: you anoint my head with oil; my cup runs over.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

Don’t Just Pretend to Love

Is there any other word in the dictionary or Bible or world for that matter that fills a being with the best of feelings? True love moves us to want the best for others, to have compassion, to offer protection…as when one’s umbrella is not large enough for two. May God touch you life with his true love today. Happy Sunday.

The Woman and the Silversmith

Last week I received the following email from my sister. I think it is worth sharing…what do you think?

Malachi 3:3 says:

He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver.”

This verse puzzled some women in a Bible study and they wondered what this statement meant about the character and nature of God.

One of the women offered to find out the process of refining silver and get back to the group at their next Bible Study.

That week, the woman called a silversmith and made an appointment to watch him at work. She didn’t mention anything about the reason for her interest beyond her curiosity about the process of refining Silver.

As she watched the silversmith, he held a piece of silver over the fire and let it heat up. He explained that in refining silver, one needed to hold the silver in the middle of the fire where the flames were hottest as to burn away all the impurities.

The woman thought about God holding us in such a hot spot; then she thought again about the verse that says:  “He sits as a refiner and purifier of silver.”  She asked the silversmith if it was true that he had to sit there in front of the fire the whole time the silver was being refined.

The man answered that yes, he not only had to sit there holding the silver, but he had to keep his eyes on the silver the entire time it was in the fire. If the silver was left a moment too long in the flames, it would be destroyed.

The woman was silent for a moment. Then she asked the silversmith, “How do you know when the silver is fully refined?” He smiled at her and answered, “Oh, that’s easy — when I see my image in it.”

If today you are feeling the heat of the fire, remember that God has his eye on you and will keep watching you until He sees His image in you.

This very moment, someone needs to know that God is watching over them. And, whatever they’re going through, they’ll be a better person in the end.

Pass the polishing cloth, please.

It’s Supernatural

So what does supernatural mean? Here’s one on-line dictionary’s explanation:

su·per·nat·u·ral
  1. 1.
(of a manifestation or event) attributed to some force beyond scientific understanding or the laws of nature.
    “a supernatural being”

Today I read this in one of my spiritual journals: Faith – the supernatural ability to trust God.

In his book, Twelve Gifts from God, William Warch wrote: Everyone has the gift of faith but not everyone has an active faith.

So then I looked up the word activate, simply put by Wikipedia …

Activate is a verb meaning to make operative or active.

Makes sense, right? We have the gift of speech (or most of us do) but we can’t use it until we activate it by opening our mouths and putting our tongue, lips, and vocal cords to work. So with faith…we must activate our mind, heart, intellect, and whatever it takes to lay hold of this gift and put it to phenomenal use.
I’m not going to be so brash as to try to tell anyone how to activate their gift of faith. When one feels the need, one seeks the deed. That in itself is supernatural.
