Oh What a Beautiful Day

I know that somewhere in the world there are snow storms, hurricanes, earthquakes and the like. But in my little corner of the world the sun is shining, the air is still, the leaves are moving gently on the trees and the temperature is perfect. It reminds me of an old song on a new day. Happy Saturday.

I’m For the Birds

Along with the red wing blackbirds, chickadees, robins, cardinals, and sparrows usually hanging out in my yard, these three newcomers paid me a visit within the last few days. It made me very happy to see the rose breasted grosbeak, a bluebird and a junco vying for a place on the feeder and even gracing my deck with a short visit. All these feathered friends add to my happiness. Happy Saturday.

Some Thoughts for a Wednesday

Don’t just think, ponder. Roy T. Bennett

“Five percent of the people think; ten percent of the people think they think; and the other eighty-five percent would rather die than think.” Thomas A. Edison

I think that’s it for today.

My Feathered Friends

Sometimes it’s the little things that can put a smile on your face. For me it was seeing my first robin of the Spring on Thursday, and right on his tail, appeared my favorite feathered friends…the cardinal and his mate.

Whatever it is that puts a smile on your face, have a happy Saturday.

Choose Happiness

Happiness Day came and went without my knowing a thing about it…but I do know I was happy. Why? Because lately many things have happened in my life to put my happiness quotient over the top.

Things like surprise visits from family, an enjoyable planned visit, a St. Patrick’s concert that was full of fun, and other special little things kept a smile on my face and in my heart for quite a few days.

Of course many things happen to dampen one’s happiness, but given a choice, most of us choose to be happy if it is in the realm of possibility.

One thing that added to my smiles was learning that Finland is the happiest country in the world. Why would that make me happy? My grandparents and their parents were from Finland. I love Finnish food. I really like seeing a Finnish name on the back of a hockey jersey…doesn’t matter what team it is.

All I’m saying is I didn’t need a Happiness Day to make me happy. It happened without my knowing it. Keep smiling.

Instant Kindness

Recently I had occasion to be in the company of some dear friends who personify kindness in all they say and do. They treated another friend and me to a night out of dinner and theater where we were all enthralled by an amazing performance of Handle’s Messiah.

When it was time to leave the theater we encountered an elderly couple making their way to the outdoors where they would be picked up by their daughter. My friends immediately took these people under their wing and spoke encouragingly to them as we waited in the cold night air for their transportation to arrive.

Now, we are a group of four of which I am the eldest at eighty-one, while my companions are still in their seventies…mere babes. The elderly couple were eighty-eight and ninety, she with a cane, and he, a rollator walker. When these dear folks were safely tucked into their daughter’s van with the help of my friends, we continued on our way to the subway which would be our means of transportation for the better part of the return home.

One of us seniors also uses a cane for temporary support and was the first to enter the slightly crowded train. As we stepped into the warmth of the subway car, four multi-cultural youths immediately and simultaneously stood up to offer us their seats.

It was the perfect ending to an evening which started with kindness and ended with the instant kindness of these four young people of various ethnic backgrounds.

It was truly a happy experience to be long remembered and I am smiling just relating it here.

Pick and Choose

This is about memories and how we pick and choose them.  I choose to think of the good things in life worth remembering, whether it was in childhood, teen years, young adult, and even advancing years.

Remembering childhood, there were not so many good memories but they can be ferreted out and cherished for what they are, leaving the not-so-good to remain unbidden.

Teen and young adult years again bring a mix of good and not so good memories but the good far outweigh the latter.

What I am getting at here is we all have memories of many kinds and it is up to us to pick and choose the ones that add to today’s happiness….and the ones that don’t…well it is best to let them go unless they have some merit in our lives today.

The lesson to be learned is that everything we have ever endured whether good or bad has been to enhance our progress through life. If we choose to focus on the unpleasant memories then, of course, they could impact our lives in a way that could be detrimental to today’s happiness.

If we choose to pick the pleasant memories to focus on, then today’s happiness quotient goes up a notch or two.

To me, it is most obvious that anything pleasant is good for the soul, and anything that stirs up angst is best left forgotten…unless it can be used therapeutically. It’s up to us to pick and choose.
