Gold Star Junkie
Do you like to be appreciated; to be told you’re doing a good job, to be loved for who you are?
I saw an interview with author Gretchen Rubin and Oprah Winfrey last night. Gretchen wrote The Happiness Project, a book about creating your own happiness by concentrating on what you can change in your life to make happiness a reality rather than a longing.
The following are some of the helpful hints mentioned in the book:
Be yourself (authentic)
Let it go (the garbage we carry)
Act the way you want to feel (sing in the morning)
Be polite and be fair (respect others)
Don’t be calculating (don’t expect return favors)
There is only love (love is the tonic)
Oprah asked Gretchen if she liked to be praised (don’t we all?) and Gretchen’s response was, “Oh yes! I’m a gold star junkie. I loved to see those gold stars on the top of my homework when I was a child.”
Someone once said to me, “You only like to hear good things.” Well, yes, I do. It makes me happy to hear good things. It makes me happy to be appreciated, to be truly loved for who I am. But it makes me happier to see others happy and to help contribute to their happiness in any small way.
While visiting someone in hospital, she made this remark, “It makes me happy to see your face.” Gold Star!
Yup, I’m a gold star junkie…and a gold star goes to all who read this blog.
Happy Sunday

And Life Goes On
Yesterday a friend and member of our congregation celebrated her birthday. I’m sure she enjoyed her day as those of us who look forward to our birthdays usually do.
It was also Father’s Day, and a very sad day for another member of our congregation whose elderly father slipped out of this life and into the next.
I had the opportunity to be with each of these people just before their special day; a day they shared in such different ways; and I was glad for that opportunity.
Once again we are reminded of the intertwining of life events. Birthdays and death days are allotted to each of us, and both are a reminder that life does go on.
Be Blessed
Whether living or dying…be blessed
Whether laughing or crying…be blessed
Whether happy or sad, whether saintly or bad…be blessed.
Whether young or old…be blessed
Whether meek or bold…be blessed
Whether idle or active, aggressive or passive…be blessed.
Whether loving or hating…be blessed
Whether lonely or mating…be blessed
Whether wealthy or nil, healthy or ill…be blessed.
At the end of the day…be blessed
As you go on your way…be blessed
Waking or sleeping, safe in God’s keeping…be blessed.
Be blessed, be blessed, be blessed.
A Time for Everything
To everything there is a season and a time to every purpose under the heaven: a time to be born and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to reap that which is planted. The Bible (KJV) I am taking this verse from specifies plucking up rather than reaping, but as you will see, reap more aptly suits my purposes for this post.
Birth and death are the only two certain things that every human being on the face of the earth shares. Today, though, I want to emphasize birth. There have been twenty-five births in my own personal family (excluding in-laws), since 1954 and a new birth is on the horizon. After a winter of planting, my seventh great-grandchild will be born in the season of Fall. In other words, that which was planted in January will be reaped in September.
Seasons come and go and each season has its own purpose, just as the seasons of our lives. I am happy to be in the winter of my life and still experiencing the joys of new birth.
Thank you Laura and Cam for adding a new bloom to the garden of life.

Will I Ever Be Happy Again?
Here is prayer number nine of Ten Prayers God Always Says Yes To and an excerpt from the chapter, God, Bring Good Out of This Bad Situation:
“God, please bring some good out of this situation” is one of the most powerful prayers in the universe–and one that God always says yes to–but it’s also one of the toughest to pray. The reason is that when we’re right in the midst of suffering, it’s very hard to calmly consider all the wonderful things that might lie in store for us in the future. After all, the future is always so unclear and hazy, while the pain we’re experiencing in the present moment is so sharp and unmistakable. That’s why cliches like “look at the bright side” and “every cloud has a silver lining” can be off-putting and even slightly nauseating when we hear them. And yet expressions like these don’t usually become cliches unless there is some truth to them. Somewhere along the line, human beings noticed that bad things can give way to good things or even lead to them. In fact, if it weren’t for the bad experiences–the failures, the humiliations, the tragedies–sometimes the very best experiences in our lives would never have occurred.
In this chapter, the author also goes on to describe a very poignant story about something Theodore Roosevelt endured when he was only twenty-six years old.
Although my own experience of a failed marriage after twenty-one years, was not as tragic as this former president’s, it was a time in my life where happiness appeared to be the last thing in store for my future. However, ten years later, I realized an unexpected happiness in the form of owning a beautiful gift shop, which would never have been possible in my married life. Although I never prayed the above prayer when my marriage failed, I remember thinking, “What good can possibly come of this failure?” God knew, and in his own way, answered that question as he would a prayer.

The Year That Was
My Precious Life, the book was the highlight of my year. It came to fruition on June 26, 2014, the day it was published by Westbow Press. It is available on many online book stores; Amazon.com, Barnes and Noble, etc. and can be ordered through any retail book store. It is a book of inspiration and life lessons.
My Precious Life, this blog, was another highlight. It began on April 5th and has just reached two-hundred and three posts, with nearly as many followers and almost seventy-five hundred views; not a huge number, I know, but not too bad for a beginner. However, the best part of this venture is the people I have met in the blogging world: very prolific and interesting people, from whom I have learned much. Thank you.
The year that was saw a granddaughter get married, another become engaged, two grandchildren realize their modeling dreams, and others seeing their dreams coming closer to fruition. My family, has and always will, be the best highlight of all my years.
The year had its ups and downs, but the ups were definitely the winners.
In the world there was, and is, sadness and despair but there is also hope.
“…In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world.” John 16:33
And on that note I extend heartfelt wishes for happiness, comfort, peace, prosperity (both spiritual and monetary), healing, health and well-being.
Happy New Year.

A Way to Happiness
Here is another little tidbit I found among my collection of wonderful quotes and sayings. This one is from Robert Schuller.
A Way to Happiness
Keep your heart free of hate.
Keep your mind free from worry.
Live simply, expect little, give much.
Fill your life with love.
Scatter sunshine.
Forget self, think of others.
Do as you would be done by.
RHS
Have a pleasant weekend.
