“For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” Matthew 18:20 NIV
This Sunday we at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Scarborough will be gathering in His name under the trees replicating a service in 1818, kicking off our 200th anniversary celebrations. This is just a hint of what’s to come. Happy Sunday.
You will go out in joy and be led forth in peace; the mountains and hills will burst into song before you, and all the trees of the field will clap their hands. Isaiah 55:12
Wherever you find yourself this Sunday, why not offer God this invitation; whether crying, laughing, singing, praying, Kum Ba Yah, my Lord, come by here. Happy Sunday.
Today there will be a spectacular event in the universe. An eclipse of the sun by the moon. Central USA residents will see the full eclipse while we here in Canada, a partial. The last Solar Eclipse was in 1979. Don your special shades and view this heavenly event. Here is Roger Whittaker’s take on Moonshadow.
Yesterday I was treated to another show of birds in my yard but what really caught my eye was a very plump robin on the birdbath. He leaned in to take a drink and leaned back to swallow it. After a few seconds of watching this, a song came to my mind. You guessed it…Rockin’ Robin. I found it on You Tube and before long was getting a day’s worth of exercise. Oh, those birds bring me so much joy!
Need a little exercise? Just dance along with Rockin’ Robin and his feathered friends on Jay Bird Street, the buzzard, oriole, pretty little raven and the gang. Go ahead, enjoy the movement, and if you have bad knees, you can bop in your chair. Have fun!
…a time to mourn and a time to dance…Ecclesiastes 3:4 NIV
Just like patience, forgiveness, tolerance, and other virtues, humility needs a lot of work. It’s not always easy to put someone else’s feelings ahead of our own, or to stay quiet when we want to correct someone. It’s definitely difficult for some to acknowledge that the creator of the universe is deserving of a bowed knee, and an outstretched hand.
Here are a few quotes on humility:
True humility is not thinking less of yourself, it’s thinking of yourself less. C.S. Lewis Mere Christianity
There is no respect for others without humility in one’s self. Henri Frederic Amie
It was pride that changed angels into devils; it is humility that makes men as angels. Saint Augustine
Self praise is no recommendation. Romanian (on flattery and praise)
Be the change you wish to see in the world. Ghandi
“A man should never be ashamed to own that he has been in the wrong, which is but saying in other words that he is wiser today than he was yesterday.”Alexander Pope
…but with humility comes wisdom. Proverbs 11:2
And now for a little humble humor from Mac Davis and the Muppets
Sometimes we have to truly seek out the truth of something in order to learn a lesson of great value. This holds true for the following song. There (in my opinion) is truth in every word and the words and truth paint a beautiful picture of life. This song was posted on Facebook this morning, followed by other fine words found in Ecclesiastes. Enjoy and learn.
Mary watched as her beloved son died on the cross…a mother’s worst nightmare…the death of her child.
Luke 23:26, 32-49 New International Version (NIV)
The Crucifixion of Jesus
26 As the soldiers led him away, they seized Simon from Cyrene, who was on his way in from the country, and put the cross on him and made him carry it behind Jesus.
32 Two other men, both criminals, were also led out with him to be executed.33 When they came to the place called the Skull, they crucified him there, along with the criminals—one on his right, the other on his left.34 Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”[b] And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.
35 The people stood watching, and the rulers even sneered at him. They said, “He saved others; let him save himself if he is God’s Messiah, the Chosen One.”
36 The soldiers also came up and mocked him. They offered him wine vinegar37 and said, “If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself.”
38 There was a written notice above him, which read: this is the king of the jews.
39 One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: “Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!”
40 But the other criminal rebuked him. “Don’t you fear God,” he said, “since you are under the same sentence?41 We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.”
42 Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.[c]”
43 Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.”
The Death of Jesus
44 It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon,45 for the sun stopped shining. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two.46 Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.”[d] When he had said this, he breathed his last.
47 The centurion, seeing what had happened, praised God and said, “Surely this was a righteous man.”48 When all the people who had gathered to witness this sight saw what took place, they beat their breasts and went away.49 But all those who knew him, including the women who had followed him from Galilee, stood at a distance, watching these things.
