Blessed Indeed

Horatio Spafford lived in Chicago. And when the great fire of 1871 ripped through the city, not only did it destroy his home, but it destroyed much of his livelihood. (He was in real estate.)

Did I mention he had no insurance?

This was a huge blow at an already difficult time. The previous year he and his wife had lost their son to scarlet fever.

So now, having no home, he put his wife and four daughters on a ship back to England as he stayed behind to try and get things started again.

Shortly thereafter he got a telegram from his wife that said, “Saved alone. What shall I do?”

There had been a shipwreck at sea. All four of their daughters drowned.

Horatio got on a ship to go and meet his wife. As he passed over the very same waters where his daughters had lost their lives, he wrote some lyrics to a song. Some of you will know them very well:

“When peace, like a river, attendeth my way,
When sorrows like sea billows roll;
Whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say,
It is well, it is well with my soul.”

These are the now-famous words to the hymn “It is well.”

How many of us can say, “It is well with my soul” even without going through the tragedies that Horatio did. There lived a man with great faith. When we get to that place in our lives, we will be blessed indeed.

A Critique of Sorts


When day twelve of this twenty day inspiration assignment arrived with its challenge to critique any piece of work, I wondered what on earth I was going to write about; and then on Sunday, a member of our church choir sang a solo. I’m not going to critique him, but the hymn, although I was quite moved by Ed’s beautiful rendition of “Because He Lives”.

It is another one of those hymns whose words implant themselves into our psyche (if we are so inclined) and are there to inspire, uplift, encourage, and increase our awareness of just how much it means to have the most famous man who ever lived, live today in the hearts and minds of those who answered His call. The song was written by Bill and Gloria Gaither. I hope this hymn does for many what it has done for me over the years…let me face many uncertain tomorrows because He lives.

Forever and Ever, Amen (A Love Song)


No, this is not about The Lord’s Prayer. It is about a love song which I first heard at the wedding of one of my God-daughters in 1987. Here are the words, sung by Randy Travis, that have played in my mind over the years since that time. My Happiness


The other day I caught myself humming a song recorded by Connie Francis in 1959, My Happiness. It was one of my favorites of the time and it popped into my head on Wednesday, January 6th. Why? Because I was feeling very happy. It was my birthday. I’m always happy on my birthday and look forward to it every year. This birthday was kind of special in that it was the first day of the last year of the seventh decade of my life. Am I happy to be saying good-bye to the seventies? Not so much, knowing there are fewer years ahead of me, but there is also a whole new decade coming up, in which, God willing, I hope to experience even more happiness.

For one thing there is a brand new family member coming to meet me in July, my eighth great-grandchild expected on July 3rd. Also, another one of my grandchildren is getting married in 2016, setting the scene for even more great-grandchildren.

Having had a few weeks of unpleasant health problems at the end of my seventy-eighth year, on my birthday I found out that although the diagnosis and prognosis are not excellent, at least they aren’t fatal, and medication should contribute to better control and more comfortable living.

I’m looking forward to enjoying my seventy-ninth year and all that it holds in store, while being mindful of Proverbs 15:13 – A happy heart makes the face cheerful…

My Happiness is still playing in my head. I don’t mind if it stays there for the next three-hundred-and-fifty-eight days.

 

A New Sound of Music

I’m wondering if Bette knew anything at all about the Helix Nebula when she recorded her famous hit, or if it’s just another of God’s wonderful ways of making himself known on our planet. The simple complexity of it all is a wonder in itself. TYG.

 

 

A Love Story


An update: I first posted this love story last year and it was a big hit. Everyone loves a love story, right?  Well, as it so happens, the love has not waned one iota and if anything, is even more poignant. Even though we are both a year older, the age difference is simply not a factor in our relationship. But one thing is a little unsettling, I don’t see him as often as I would like to and now he has another new interest in his life which I will reveal a little later in the story. So here you go…

 

I have a confession to make. I’m in love with a younger man. At my age you pretty much have to be. You see, I’m seventy-eight years old, and men my age and up are just not interested in older women.

It’s not the first time I’ve been in love, but it is the first time in a long time.

I met my new love just over three years ago. It was love at first sight. Let me tell you about him. First of all he is good to look at..blonde hair, smiling eyes, slim build…a real charmer.

He is so much fun and makes me feel young. He is inquisitive, talkative, and playful. At a recent party he gave me his undivided attention and told me he loved me. My heart melted. Twice, in front of everyone, he leaned into me and hugged me…didn’t matter who was watching.

He loves music and is a top-notch dancer. ..like, he really has the moves. The only problem I have is he is a bit of a lady’s man. Women love him and I’m not too sure that I can handle all the appreciative stares, or the outstretched arms to hug him at every opportunity.

He is physically fit and fancies himself as a hockey player…whereas I haven’t donned a pair of skates in decades.

Sometimes I tell myself I’m too old for love, but when we’re together my heart melts and I am putty in his hands.

I didn’t expect to put my new-found love in the limelight, but there you have it. What more can I say, except I really love this guy!

From Another Realm


Shortly after the death of her husband, a friend turned on her radio and heard “Smile though your heart is aching, smile even though it’s breaking…”

Smile is song from 1936 when Charlie Chaplin composed the music for his movie, Modern Times, though John Turner and Geoffrey Parsons added the lyrics and title in 1954. It is now 2015 and this song is still being heard by those who need to hear it.

I’m including a piece from the Poetry section of my blog site to show how another song manifested itself shortly after my mother’s death. The poem tells the story.

ANN

“Who’s Sorry Now”
was her favorite song.
“You’ll be sorry when I’m dead and gone,”
she would bellow at her two girls for whatever reason.
Her life spanned fifty-nine years
of hard work and harder partying…
and then she died of a cerebral hemorrhage.
We were two sisters
detailing the aftermath of her death.
Sorting clothes, memorabilia, and personal papers,
we turned on the Telefunken stereo
to break the deadly silence of this once lively house.
WHO’S SORRY NOW
blared from the old set.
We physically jumped!
She was dead and gone, and she had been right:
we were sorry.
Ann was our mother,
and she was bellowing at us one more time…
from another realm.

 

 

Reunited


“Reunited and it feels so good”…those are the only words I like in the song of the same title.

Yesterday I was reunited with the me I used to be. It happened with Abba, the Swedish singing group. Actually,  it was “The Best of Abba” CD with such hits as Supertrouper, Dancing Queen, Waterloo, and Fernando, among other great songs.

Dancing was a huge part of my younger life. I loved it! Somehow it went by the wayside when debilitating health problems took a toll on my body.

It was on a one hour drive that I popped the CD into its slot and the me I used to be was suddenly behind the wheel of my 2006 Kia Magenta SX.

Oh, the joy of feeling that music coursing through me, caused my  entire body to react to the sounds vibrating from the speakers. I could have been on a dance floor instead of a highway.

For a full hour I relived my dancing days, and really felt the meaning of “Reunited and it feels so good”. The me I used to be was happy to be back and I welcomed her with open arms, if not dancing feet.
